Sleep training

Straight up, I'm pretty much against sleep training babies. I think you need to let babies develop healthy sleep patterns naturally. I think it's really sad that so many babies are pushed to all develop on the same schedule with the same patterns. Are we really trying to shape a society of clones?

So I guess I lucked out with Derick. He was a really great sleeper right from the start. He quickly found his groove and would easily sleep 12-14 hours a night when he was just 1 year old. He is still a great sleeper. He doesn't nap anymore but he does like to sleep in. If he does get up early he will either play quietly on his own or just go back to bed.

Mr. Warren is a whole different story here! At one year old he still has been waking up to nurse 3-6x a night. Most nights he hates to be put to bed and he frequently wakes up way too early. So I decided that it was time to seek out some guidance on sleep training. And after talking with some friends, I found this article.

Right off the bat I was intrigued because this doctor is a strong proponant of things that are very important to me... he does not support sleep training of young babies, he does support extended breast feeding and safe co-sleeping. As I read on I realized that his method of sleep training was very similar to what I had already been doing with Warren, he just put it all together into a set schedule. It was exactly what I needed to hear & I was determined to give it a whirl.

Tonight is night 3 of Warren's sleep training. Before I began this program Warren was fighting sleep to the point of screaming for up to an hour and a half when I tried to put him to bed and again when he woke up in the middle of the night. Tonight, he went to sleep quickly and quietly. So quickly in fact that he only nursed on one side instead of two! Last night he only woke up to feed twice and he slept in until 9:30 am!

Dr. Jay Gordon says that we should establish designated off hours for feeding. Our off hours are now 1 am - 8 am. I'm thrilled at the thought of being able to have these 7 hours to myself for peaceful sleep! I'll keep you updated and let you know if it works.
